Size
Wingspan: 145cm/57in
Depth: 65cm/25½in

Materials

  • 1 x skeins Viola Merino Lace (laceweight, 100% merino, 754m/825yds/115g) in Lettuce
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook

There is no direct US conversion for a 2.5 mm hook so if you can’t find this size, work with either a US B/1 or C/2 depending on whether your gauge is loose or tight, and always use a hook size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Tension
5 pattern reps & 13 rows to 10cm/4in over lace pattern

Difficulty
Intermediate

Skills needed
basic crochet stitches, working into chain spaces, working in rows.

Construction
Altair starts at one point and is worked in a pattern that increases on the neck edge towards the shortest edge. RS and WS are notional as pattern is fully reversible. As the pattern starts at a point it makes sense to start the pattern as your swatch. Stop, wash and block the piece to check tension and drape then if satisfied you can continue to work.

Lightweight and pretty

This was my first lace weight shawl and it took FOREVER to get to the end of the skein, but it was worth the effort. The geometric pattern makes it feel modern and it worked surprisingly well in a variegated yarn.

Not as difficult as it looks

This pattern looks as if it could be tricky, however it's actually very simple once you get going. The instructions are very clear with helpful diagrams. The effect of the lacework is beautiful especially after blocking and the result is a very elegant shawl, perfect for special occasions.

Lovely easy pattern

I'd never used lace weight before and it makes a very portable shawl! It fitted into my bag and as the pattern is a simple repeat it was very easy to remember so I ended up making it on the go. Beautiful light shawl with a gorgeous drape. I will definitely make another one

A really elegant pattern

I'd always looked at laceweight yarn at various yarn shows but I didn't have a pattern to make something beautiful. This is a lovely pattern which creates an elegant and sophisticated shawl.
